Parkour for Beginners in Sheffield

Thinking about trying parkour in Sheffield but not sure where to start? You’re in exactly the right place. Sheffield Parkour & Freerunning has been welcoming complete beginners since 2005, and this guide covers everything you need to know before your first session — no experience required.

Anyone can start

The biggest myth about parkour is that you have to already be strong, young or fearless. You don’t. Parkour is about moving through your environment efficiently and safely, and that starts with the basics: balancing, landing softly, jumping with control and building strength gradually. People of every age, shape and fitness level train with us, and everyone begins somewhere. If you’re curious, that’s enough.

The best way to start: come to a free session

You’ll learn far more in one friendly session than in a hundred YouTube videos. Our community runs free weekly sessions in Sheffield, mostly at Endcliffe Parkour Park, and beginners are always welcome. There’s no cost and no need to book — just turn up, introduce yourself, and someone will happily show you the fundamentals at your own pace.

What to expect at your first session

Expect a warm welcome and a relaxed atmosphere. You’ll usually start with a warm-up, then work on foundational movements — safe landings, balancing on rails, basic vaults and jumps. Nobody will push you to do anything you’re not ready for; in parkour, progressing slowly and training smart is the whole point. Ask questions, take your time, and enjoy it.

What to wear and bring

  • Comfortable, flexible clothing
  • Trainers with good grip (running or skate shoes are ideal)
  • Water and a warm layer for afterwards
  • No special equipment needed — parkour uses the world around you

Is parkour safe?

Trained sensibly, parkour is a brilliant way to build genuine strength, coordination and body awareness. The golden rule is progression: master the basics on the ground before you go higher or bigger. Training with an experienced community is by far the safest way to learn — you’ll pick up good habits from people who’ve been doing this for years, rather than guessing on your own.
